On the bright morning of June 9, 2022, at eleven thirty, the dedicated executive members of Utuenikan Ndito Akwa Ibom Community Development Foundation, a Non-Governmental Agency (NGO), undertook a meaningful social and assessment visit to Mfon Abasi Orphanage in Ikot Oku Mfang, Abak LGA.

The foundation, committed to its social responsibility to communities in the state, embarked on this visit with a mission to uplift the lives of the children in the orphanage.

Mrs. Esther Monday Tom, the Matron of the Orphanage Home, shared the inspiring backstory of her late husband’s decision to establish the orphanage. Motivated by his own experience as an orphan and driven by the concern for the abandonment and deaths of children in the community, Mr. Monday Tom aimed to break the cycle of suffering. Since his passing, Mrs. Tom has taken charge, nurturing and caring for the 35 children currently under their care, having supported over 65 children at different times.

During the inspection, the team observed that the classrooms lacked adequate furnishings for effective teaching and learning. Moreover, the facility faced challenges such as the absence of electricity, a clinical ward, and a shortage of books and textbooks.

Responding to these needs, the Utuenikan Ndito Akwa Ibom Community Development Foundation, through the Akwa Ibom State team, pledged their commitment to assist the orphanage and vowed to make regular visits to offer ongoing support. They also extended a humble plea to other NGOs, as well as public, private, and corporate organizations, encouraging them to join in alleviating the struggles of the orphanage and others scattered across the state.

To kickstart their assistance, the NGO generously presented essential items and materials to the orphanage. This compassionate effort follows a previous commitment by the foundation to equip the classrooms with over 40 chairs during their initial familiarity visit.

In a collective call to action, the foundation expressed, “Together we can make our world a better place.”
